SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse Orange are set to take on the Drexel University Dragons this Saturday, January 28, at the Class Of 1923 Ice Arena.
This will be the Orange’s second time facing off against the Dragons after a postponement of two games back in November.
Freshman Max Gargurevich explains “It’s definitely going to be off seeing a divisional opponent for the first time this late in the season… It’s tough that we have no prior knowledge of them, but they are going to have the same problem with us.”
The Orange are coming off a split weekend series against Niagara University, while Drexel is coming off of a 4-2 win against Villanova University
Forward Evan Vassilovsky believes that it is the Orange’s repeated sloppy mistakes and misplays that continue to cost them games.
“We have to come in with higher standards for how we need to play. A lot of the things that cost us in games, especially against teams that we’re unfamiliar with, is sloppy mistakes,” said the freshman. “The biggest thing we need to do to make sure we limit those is to get plenty of rest and have our minds in the right place coming into the game.”
Coming back from the break, the team has gotten sharper and more confident in their play. Gargurevich believes that the team is proud of the hurdles they’ve overcome after the first half.
“We have definitely been getting a lot sharper since coming back from the break,'' said Gargurevich. “Our passing and movement have significantly improved since returning and it showed last weekend. so we want to carry that with us into next weekend in Philly.”
Vassilovsky expanded saying that the team has gained a lot of confidence since last week’s win, and are hopeful they can come away with two wins this weekend.
“To be able to hold on and win in what was a close game until the very end was huge for our team’s morale. We’ve been practicing with a lot more confidence and optimism this week knowing we’re able to get a gritty win like that against a good team.”
The Orange are coming into this weekend ready to play hard, fast and gritty, as Drexel has been a more physical team in the past. They want to capitalize on their chances and make sure they can hold down any lead they get.
Gargurevich, who had his first multipoint game of the season last weekend, is ready for this weekend and is hoping that he can carry this momentum into the series against Drexel.
“We all want to keep up our pace of play from last weekend, I think that applies to me too having my first multi-point weekend last week and that’s definitely something I want to replicate, or at least do what I can to help us get 4 points on Drexel,” said the forward.
You can catch the Orange this Saturday, January 29th at 7:40 at Class Of 1923 Ice Arena, and Sunday, January 30, at 2:45.
